Things to consider before applying:
1, Start with a Shortlist
There are many excellent schools in Richmond Borough, both state and independent. Begin by:
• Exploring your catchment area (you don’t have to choose your nearest school, but proximity often matters)
• Looking at Ofsted reports and school websites
• Asking friends and local parents about their experiences.
2. Take a Tour or attend an Open Day.
Most schools offer open days in the autumn, often between October–December. These are a great way to:
• Get a feel for the school environment
• Meet the headteacher and staff
• Ask questions about their values, approach to learning, and daily routines
💬 Tip: Bring a few questions with you! Ask about class sizes, outdoor space, wraparound care, and how they support different learning styles.
Our list of schools page has all of the information you need on Tour and Open days.
3. How will we get there?
School runs are part of daily life, so factor in how you’ll get there:
• Can you walk or bike safely?
• Is there room for a scooter or buggy park?
• Will you need to drive, and is there parking?
• Are there public transport options nearby?
Some parents prioritise community-based schools they can walk to — others are happy to travel for the right fit.
4. Chat to Local Families
If you’re unsure, tap into the local parenting community. Other families can give honest insight into:
• What the school really feels like day-to-day
• Strengths and quirks of each setting
• Tips on navigating the application process
5. What You’ll Need to Apply
Have these handy when applying:
• Your child’s name and date of birth
• Council tax account number (to verify address)
• Your top 6 school choices (ranked in order)
• Any supporting documents if applying under special circumstances (SEN, EHCP, siblings, etc.)
⭐ Bonus Tips
• Visit multiple schools, even if you think you have a favourite — sometimes the vibe surprises you!
• Many local schools host weekly playgroups for under 5s, as well as summer fairs, school fetes, and other community events during term time — a great way to get a feel for the school and meet local families. Keep an eye out for posters, social media posts, or school noticeboards!
• Consider after-school clubs or wraparound care options if you’ll need them
• Don’t forget to check for nursery applications or secondary school deadlines if your child is older!
